This course will use the writing process to teach middle and high school students creative and critical thinking techniques and editing skills to produce finely wrought pieces of writing in various academic genres such as persuasive essays, personal essays, speeches, podcast scripts, literary analysis, and timed writing. Students will do writing exercises during class and for homework. Lessons will feature one-on-one conferences with the teacher to discuss each student’s work-in-progress. 

In this introductory philosophy and writing course, students will learn to understand important topics in political philosophy, ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics, and will also obtain and refine their skills in logical reasoning, critical analysis, argument construction, and effective writing. Above all else, they will learn to read, understand, and analyze challenging texts. 

In the first semester of this course, we will cover three different units: Ethics, Epistemology, and Political Philosophy. 

Halfway through the first semester, students will begin developing an outline for a paper that applies philosophical concepts from class to a contemporary issue or discussion. Working on this through the end of the semester, students will complete a short paper that should integrate class material with their own thinking and analysis.  

In the second half of this course, we will cover two sub-units within metaphysics: first, free will and moral responsibility, and second, the mind and personal identity.

By the end of the second half of the course, students will have completed a longer philosophical essay, applying all the skills they’ve learned thus far. 

Every class will include deep analysis of complex, complicated texts, large and small group discussions, and workshopping students’ ideas as they form and evolve. In doing so, students will build the analytical and communication skills necessary for strong philosophical argumentation. The primary intention of this class is not to provide students with a definition of various philosophical theories and facts about the thinkers behind them. The goal of this class is not to memorize the content. Rather, this class is intended for students who are interested in the challenge of dissecting complex ideas and engaging with each part of different philosophers' arguments.

The Outsiders - S.E Hinton
Students will learn to read, annotate and analyze literary passages to inspire writing of their own and reflect on their own lives as adolescents.

How to Train Your Dragon - Cressida Cowell 
Students will read this story and work in their own creative writing skills by adding additional chapters and sections, demonstrating their ability to write in different tones and styles.  

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins 
Students will be introduced to concepts of dystopia and utopia, and take the themes and ideas present in the novel and reflect on our own world  drawing comparisons and contrasts through a formal essay. 

Overview:

This course is based on The Economist covering trending topics in the economy, politics, technology, and social issues, and so on. It helps students with their comprehension of current events through critical interpretation to not only teach the knowledge but also foster critical thinking.

Suitable Students:
This program is ideal for students who have demonstrated proficiency in English and a willingness to communicate and engage in the course of study. There are no requirements to joining this program, but it is recommended for students in G7+. 

This program also provides a great opportunity for young debaters who are keen to develop awareness of current events and build a cognitive framework.

Frontiers of Tech & Us is a weekly lecture course that will teach students about contemporary issues in technology, economics, international relations, science, and art.

By synthesizing concepts across multiple aspects of an interconnected world, students will increase awareness of the trends shaping their future. Frontiers of Tech & Us uses popular press articles from multiple sources to provide a neutral and well-informed take on all the stories fit to print!

This program is ideal for students who have demonstrated proficiency in English and a willingness to communicate and engage in the course of study. There are no requirements to joining this program, but it is recommended for students in G5+. 

A Tale of Two Cities is the best-selling Dickens novel of all time, with good reason. Charles Dickens turns his sharp eye for social criticism on the French Revolution, showing its causes and effects and its lessons for his time and ours. He also examines the unpredictable consequences of actions, the consuming passion of revenge, and the power of love and redemption.  

We will explore the novel’s historical and literary context and the techniques for which Dickens is most famous: drawing character, fashioning plot, and writing superbly crafted sentences.  Students will learn syntax analysis, and will analyze the novel using paragraph and essay forms.  The final assignment will be an essay, for which students will submit a draft for discussion.

The course comprises twelve 90-minute classes; homework will include two to four chapters of reading and written assignments.
